Nichrien Smith has become a visible and passionate voice for recovery, second chances, and community action. Known publicly as The Carpenter’s Son, he uses his platform to encourage people who may feel forgotten, rejected, or trapped by their circumstances. His message consistently emphasizes perseverance, faith, service, and the belief that recovery is possible.

As the visionary behind the growing network of transitional recovery houses, Nichrien has helped turn public encouragement into tangible action. The acquisition and development of Safe Haven marked an important milestone in the mission, providing men in recovery with an environment dedicated to stability and restoration.

Safe Haven has continued to develop beyond residential accommodation. The property includes the Jennifer June Learning Center, reinforcing the importance of education, personal development, and preparation for independent living. Nichrien’s leadership has also inspired a growing community known as The People of Hope—supporters, volunteers, donors, recovery advocates, and ordinary individuals who believe that compassion should lead to action.

Amberlyn Haden brings both professional recovery-support training and compassionate leadership to the mission. She publicly identifies herself as a Certified Recovery Support Specialist, Certified Peer Specialist–Adult, Community Health Worker, and Mental Health First Aid practitioner. These credentials reflect training designed to help individuals use lived experience, peer support, and recovery-focused guidance to assist others in developing their own pathway toward wellness.

Her vision is embodied in Amber’s House, a recovery residence for women in Birmingham. Amber’s House was created as a place of hope, healing, and restoration for women who need a safe environment in which to begin again. Its purpose extends beyond maintaining sobriety. It is intended to help residents develop stability, confidence, healthy routines, employment readiness, supportive relationships, and the practical skills necessary for long-term independence.

The home’s public opening represented more than the completion of a property. It marked the creation of a community where women can be seen, supported, challenged, and loved without being condemned by their past. Amber has also celebrated important signs of progress among the women she serves, including residents pursuing employment and attending job interviews—moments that demonstrate the broader purpose of recovery housing.

At the heart of this work is a message of redemption. Pain does not have to be the conclusion of a person’s story. Past choices do not have to become permanent identities. Addiction may have interrupted a life, but it does not have to possess the final word.

The need for recovery housing is about far more than shelter.
